Description: Morgan Hickman is a bounty hunter bringing a dead man into a town of people who, as usual, hold him in contempt. The rest of the movie offers us a veritable graduate course in Western frontier law enforcement. Description: Sean Connery and Brigitte Bardot display a likeable, low-key camaderie as an indian scout and a titled Frenchwoman who's a lot faster on the uptake than most of her companions--crude sex appeal gives way to something more realistic and appealing. Bardot forgoes pouting and wriggling and is all the more likeable for it (1968 was also the year of her excellent cameo in the "William Wilson" segment of LES HISTOIRES EXTRAORDINAIRE, yet another renunciation of her sex-kitten persona). Stephen Boyd and Honor Blackman are equally good as a predatory criminal and the English noblewoman who runs off with him from a mixture of craven calculation and sheer boredom--Boyd is flat-out sinister yet also charming, and Blackman is a vivid portrait of a woman stifled by her circumstances yet also quite willing to exploit the advantages of those circumstances.

Synopsis
Based on the novel by Louis L'Amour, Shalako is a handsome, rousing western that delivers nonstop thrills with both barrels blazing. Gutsy, gunslinging Shalako (Connery) is a loner who looks out for number one, until he finds himself rescuingand falling fora beautiful countess (Bardot) under attack by Apache Indians. But when Shalako discovers that the countess is part of a European hunting party that refuses to be led to safety, he must summon all his courage to fight the Apache and save the woman he loves or die trying.

LA GRAN PELICULA DE LA HISTORIA : el western lo HEROICO , EPICO Y LEYENDA

De cuantos géneros conforman el cine, el western es el más genuino. El galope de un jinete solitario en el desierto; la tensa espera del héroe en la calle vaciada por el miedo, presto a desenfundar antes que el pistolero; la carga del 7º de Caballería, con el cornetín exaltando a la tropa con su toque de a degüello son imágenes que única y exclusivamente ha ofrecido el cine.Más aún, cualquier retrato del gran John Wayne «Duke» para los amantes del western , «con sus botas, su cinturón y su revólver», como quería que lo enterraran el senador Ransom Stoddard (James Stewart) en El hombre que mató a Liberty Valance, es un icono que representa por sí solo a todo el cine.

Dirigida por tres de sus más grandes especialistas, John Ford, Henry Hathaway y George Marshall, como su propio título indica, La conquista del Oeste es una antología de los distintos episodios que conformaron aquella gesta la odisea de los tramperos, la expansión del ferrocarril, las guerras indias y la de Secesión, el triunfo de la justicia donde no había más ley que la del revólver... . es «la épica de la historia de la Humanidad. En el western, además del origen de la fundación de la última nación moderna, se encuentra el origen de la fundación de los imperios.Aunque les moleste a los pacifistas, la guerra forma parte de la historia de la Humanidad, sin ella no hubiera habido desarrollo.El western es la conquista de la tierra, me entusiasma por eso».

«El western es uno de los ejemplos de narrativa épica más elaborada de todo el siglo XX. Por eso, decir que es un género reaccionario resulta una tontería grandísima. Desde el primer plano hasta el último, Centauros del desierto (1956) es un verdadero prodigio.Lo maravilloso de John Ford es que no necesita verbalizar lo que ocurre a sus héroes». En cuanto a El hombre que mató a Liberty Valance (1962), otro de los prodigios llama nuestra atención sobre la secuencia en que Tom Doniphon (John Wayne) le cuenta a Ransom Stoddard quién disparó verdaderamente sobre Valance (Lee Marvin). «Cuando el héroe queda en la sombra es como si fueran dos películas. Por un lado, la de la historia respetable y convencional; por el otro, la de la soledad, completamente fuera de la norma, de lo correcto».

Es bueno considerar que una de las más interesantes de John Ford «es la evolución de su mirada sobre América. En este sentido, El hombre que mató a Liberty Valance es un pivote: Ford empieza a incluir en ella a la gente que piensa. Por eso, Doniphon, el pistolero, otorga el mérito de haber matado a Liberty a Stoddard, el intelectual. Es el fin del mundo de la violencia ciega, que da paso a un mundo racional».

En el film El hombre que mató a Liberty Valance, alabo especialmente la secuencia final, «cuando Stoddard y su mujer viajan en el tren y ella, refiriéndose al paisaje que les rodea, comenta que donde ahora hay un jardín antes hubo un desierto. Otro de los western crepusculares que destaca es Grupo salvaje, la obra maestra de Sam Peckinpah. Destaca la secuencia en que Pike Bishop y sus camaradas abandonan el burdel para ir a enfrentarse al general Mapache.

SI se nos remite al western proindio: «Pequeño gran hombre (1970), con su desmitificación del general Custer y, 20 años después, Bailando con lobos, con esa fraternidad entre el teniente Dumbar (Kevin Costner) y los sioux, son películas que nos ofrecen una visión muy progresista de algo que siempre se había tratado de una forma muy reaccionaria: los indios».

Amén de la desmitificación del general Custer, puesta en marcha por Arthur Penn en Pequeño gran hombre, nos remite «a esos momentos poéticos tan conseguidos». Como ejemplo nos propone la secuencia de la masacre del poblado cheyenne: «Hay un indio ciego que no ve nada y nadie le ve a él». Ahora bien, haciendo honor al hecho de que el western es un género básicamente masculino.

AHORA si vemos que : «Hablando de westerns proindios hay que decir que Fort Apache (1948) es anterior a Pequeño gran hombre. Aunque nunca se dice el nombre, se trata de una crítica a Custer». Al igual que la mayoría de los buenos aficionados al género, no me interesa demasiado el western moderno: «Lo encuentro truculento y un tanto falso».

«Para las personas de mi generación(1962), el western es el género cinematográfico por excelencia», , «Su mensaje último es la lucha del hombre por la supervivencia, lo que es aplicable a cualquier faceta de la vida». Respecto a Dos hombres y un destino, para el buen cinéfilo es la primera aventura cínica aquellas en que los ladrones son presentados como buenos : «Es una de las primeras superproducciones de Hollywood en torno al western moderno, que no suponía la desmitificación sino la respuesta al western de Sergio Leone». Finalmente, en cuanto a El Alamo, otro de los hitos del género, manifiesta: «Es una película épica, ajustada a unos hechos históricos [la resistencia de un pequeño grupo de tejanos a un ejército mexicano]. En la distancia, lo que más me interesa destacar, por encima de sus mensajes patrióticos, son las magníficas interpretaciones de los actores».
