Leading a regiment of Kentucky's riflemen, John Wayne passes through a settlement of dispatriated French families. When there, Wayne's heart is captured by the French general's daughter, but a powerful rival, Blake Randolph, also has his heart set on her. Wayne discovers his rival has a nefarious scheme up his sleeve, and the courtship battle quickly escalates into a full-scale war.

This is one of John Wayne's More romantic movies, but just because he acts a little softer do not expect a mushy John Wayne here, there are some fantastic stunts in this movie and a story line that is as good as anything they are pushing out today, this movie stands the test of time. This is also the second movie he stared in and Produced (The first was Angel and the Bad Man) A Kentuckian that is in the Militia in Alabama around 1818 and on his way back to Kentucky is waylaid by a beautiful French woman and some devious land crabbing swindlers. The Local big shot has moved the land markers on the French so that they are settled on the wrong land, so it is Wayne to the Rescue when he finds out what is going on. What makes this movie so good it the cast that is in it, one of them being Oliver Hardy, in one of only 2 performances that he did with out a partner, the first being in 1939's "Zenobia". Oliver was a good friend of Wayne's and had to be prompted to take the role and when you see him, you will be glad they made him do it. He is easily one of the best things in this movie. This is a great movie one of the best 100 minutes you will spend watching a classic western. It is a fun adventure.

This film, produced by The Duke, proves good acting can make up for the lack of a good script. Wayne plays opposite Ralston, who has about as much French charisma as Stan Laurel. Oliver Hardy saves the day and ironically has more screen time with The Duke than Vera does! Sort of reminds one of the backstage feuds WC Fields had with Mae West in "Chickadee" when conveniently, they stayed away from each other as much as possible. Wayne's persona comes through despite a story line that is more rugged than the "boundry line" issue that we are supposed to follow in the plot. We 21st century folk benefit from dvd's where we can rewind in order to follow confusing dialogue. Pitty the poor patrons in the 1949 cinemas who had no such tool! Hardy was pecked at by Wayne to take the co-starring role and the former probably knew he needed him "BIG" time! Hardy is no Orson Welles but he knows enough not to overplay his hand and downplays some of the unecessary slapstick that was thrown into the film. Production notes mention Wayne's double who did the "editted" saddle--less horse boarding. I wondered if Hardy had a double as his role had quite a bit of brisk marching for an older, large man and a casual observer notices that his stature appears smaller at certain times in the film. It is interesting to note that Wayne is uncharachteristically hiding through a good section of the final gun slinging scene. One can speculate why, but perhaps they desired to use up some spare footage and other horse chasing scenes.

I love this john wayne movie it's funny... it may be older but it's really a good movie and my favorite movie by him.

A once in a lifetime movie that is worth watching twice or more! With the combination of John Wayne & Oliver Hardy as is Sidekick very un-likely but it sure worked. With also a Great Oldies Cast and very enjoyable with lots of action. Mr. Wayne & Mr.Hardy
