Based on an incident that happened in the first winter of the war in Bosnia in 1992. Two young boys, Halil, a Muslim, and Milan, a Serb, watch the inauguration of the new Brotherhood and Unity Tunnel in their neighborhood in 1980. Twelve years later, Milan lies in a hospital bed, badly injured. Wounded Serbs and Muslims recover in the same hospital. Recalling the events that brought him there, Milan finds it hard to believe that he is again that close to his recent enemies. He remembers the vicious firefight where their Muslim enemies trapped him and a group of Serb soldiers in the very same tunnel in a ten-day siege. And now Halil and Milan are on opposing sides, their friendship tattered and in ruins.

The film starts in the Belgrade army hospital where casualties of Bosnian civil war are treated. In the hospital they remember their youth and the war. The main focus is on two young boys, Halil (Nikola Pejakovic), a Muslim, and Milan (Dragan Bjelogric), a Serb, which have grown up together near a deserted tunnel linking the Yugoslav cities of Belgrade and Zagreb. They never dare go inside, as they believe an ogre resides there. Twelve years later, during the Bosnian civil war, Milan, who is trapped in the tunnel with his troop, and Halil, find themselves on opposing sides, fatefully heading toward confrontation. Being of Serbian heritage, and being born in the U.S.A, I can say that I've seen many films on both sides. America has the Vietnam film, and so a film like THE DEER HUNTER can be said tha it is the best Vietnam film of all time. So, it can be said that Pretty Village... is the best film about the Bosnian war! My family took in a Serbian Soldier that was wonded during that war, lost a leg and eye in battle, and the stories he told are eerily silimar to this film.

I am also a film maker, and I can say that over the many years of seeing brilliant films, this one is one of the best. The film cuts back and forth like a pendulam.... showing us just enough of each character's past to understand why they joined the army... and why they are now starving in a tunnel. The film is heavy on symbolisim... the tunnel represents all that was lost with the break up of Yugoslavia. It represents what ONCE WAS... and now is the setting of a tragic battle.

The film begins with a story about a wedding party that was killed... and yes, its true, a Serbian wedding party was killed before the war broke out... this lead to the bloody conflict. The film captures all the right aspects of the war. It can be said that this film is up there with Emir Kusterica's UNDERGROUND as one of the best films from the former Yugoslavia. Also, not a strange coincedence at the end of the film. This film was shot before the Kosovo conflict... a couple of years before.... but in the end, a image of the tunnel is shown being RE-OPEN! A narrator says that the Tunnel was being re-opened for the international community.... then a man cuts his thumb on the ribbon.... just as he did at the start. The meaning behind this is suppose to indicate that another conflict would errupt in that region! The narrator said the year was 1999. Funny how the film predicted that something would happen that year... which it did: KOSOVO! That is very bizarre!

I saw this movie at the 1996 Cleveland Film Festival. I've been looking for this film ever since then and I finally found it. This film is a great story about the lives of two friends, one Serb and the other Muslim, destroyed by the idiocy of war and hatred. If you don't mind the subtitles, you will love this movie as much as I did.

A honest, touching personal; story about two friends divived by the Bosnian conflict of the 1990's. Many films have been by in America and the UK about Bosnia but most of them aren't very good (see "Harrison's Flowers"), but this film was a great tresure to find.

born in Serbia and emmigrated with parents at the age of 6 out of this country you always feel you have ties to this land and its people. This movie was very powerful to me personally. I spent 2 years trying to make a life for myself here just before the war broke out. I will never ever understand why friend turned against friend. I hate and love this movie. I hate the way we are portrayed and yet it is so true...I hate the fact that no matter what, wether it has aything to do withe a movie or not, there always has to be a very guesome and vulgar sex scene in every singel es YU movie.... This movie left me depressed and all the more reasone why I never ever want to return there... nothing more to say...sorrry.!
